India Pagan had 26 points on Sunday afternoon as the Stony Brook Seawolves got past the Maine Black Bears 73-69 in America East women’s basketball at Island Federal Credit Union Arena in Stony Brook, New York.
The game saw 15 lead changes and four ties with most of those coming in the first half. The Seawolves had the biggest lead of the first quarter at six points, and led by that margin after the opening 10 minutes 23-17. A 7-0 run to start the second by the Black Bears put them in front 24-23 on a three-pointer from Kelly Fogarty, and layups from Maddy McVicar and Maeve Carroll. Maine (5-11, 1-1 AE) took a pair of four point leads which was their biggest and led 38-34 at halftime. Both teams shot well in the first half as the visitors were at 60%, and the Seawolves at 50%.
Anastasia Warren scored on pair of layups to begin the third quarter to tie it, before McVicar gave the Black Bears their final lead of the day with a three-pointer at 41-38. Stony Brook then went on a run that would ultimately decide the game with a 12-0 spurt over the next 5:23 for their biggest lead 50-41, and led 52-46 headed to the fourth quarter. The Black Bears shot just 1-10 from the floor in the third period. Maine got within four twice in the final quarter but that is as close as they would get as Stony Brook (14-1, 2-0) held on to win their 11th straight game.
Carroll recorded a career high in points and also her second career double double in the Maine loss. She finished just short of a triple double with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists. All five Black Bear starters scored in double figures as Anne Simon had 15, Dor Saar 13, Fogarty 12, and McVicar with 10. Simon also added eight rebounds and Saar had four assists. It was the first conference loss for Maine since January 16th of last season. Pagan shot 13-14 from the floor in the Stony Brook win. Kaela Hilaire had 18 points, and Warren added 17. Maine will host UNH on Wednesday night.
