Patrice Bergeron scored a powerplay goal in overtime on Saturday night, to lead the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The teams exchanged goals throughout regulation. New York (27-12-4) opened the scoring on a Scott Mayfield tally at 4:36 of the first period. Jake Debrusk evened it with his 14th goal at 8:33 of the second. John Moore would give Boston the lead at 5:48 of the third period. The Islanders had the answer to send it to overtime when Mathew Barzal scored 3:45 later at 9:33 to make it 2-2. Bergeron would end things when he received a pass from Torey Krug along the left wing boards into the middle of the two faceoff circles, where he fired a wrister that found the net at 1:33. Bruins goalie Tuuka Rask also assisted on Bergerons game winner, his 19th goal of the season.
Rask made 35 saves in the win, as Boston improves to 27-8-11 and have won three in a row after a three game losing streak. Anders Bjork, Charlie Coyle, Danton Heinen, and Charlie McAvoy also had assists on the night. Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves for New York in the loss. Barzal was the only multiple point scorer with a goal and an assist. The Bruins were 1-2 on the powerplay, while the Islanders were 0-1. Boston is at Philadelphia Monday night.
