At Johnston Gymnasium at the EMCC campus Friday night, Junior guard William Brown hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter to help the Howlers pull away from the Patriots 38-23. It was Brown’s first varsity start, and he made the most of it with a team-high (and career high) nine points. Senior guard Reece Carter also netted nine points..
Both teams were struggling to get the offense going early, as Penobscot Valley held a 7-5 lead late in the first quarter. Carter’s 3-pointer just before the buzzer extended the lead to 10-5. He and Alex Tash each scored four in the frame. Deliberate play by both teams in the second quarter had PV up 15-10 at the half.
Bangor Christian doubled their scoring output in the 3rd quarter by scoring 10; eight of those by David Stanley. Brown however, connected on three straight three pointers to help extend the lead to eight, 28-20. The Howler defense really clamped down in the fourth, holding Bangor Christian scoreless until a last second 3-pointer by Ryan Libby ended the drought.
Besides Brown and Carter’s nine points, the Howlers also got scoring contributions by Zach Mitchell (7 points) and Tash (7). Shane Borrello, Bryce Seeley, and Ryan Thompson each scored a basket. PVHS improves to 6-4 and hosts Schenck on Monday.
Bangor Christian was led by Stanley, who had a game-high 10 points. Brady Reed scored six, Ryan Libby (3), Gabe Nason (2), and Kaeden Robert (2) rounded out the scoring. The Patriots slip to 0-11 and host Searsport on Monday.
