The #5 Colby White Mules once again proved why they are one of the best Division III men’s basketball teams in the entire country on Tuesday night, as Sam Jefferson scored 21 points and Alex Dorion had 20 to help Colby roll over the Husson Eagles 97-70 at Newman Gymnasium in Bangor.
Husson (6-9) started strong taking an early lead 11-5 on a Justin Thompson layup. The Eagles took their last lead of the night 23-22 on a Justice Kendall layup with 11:50 left in the first half. Dean Weiner though hit a jumpshot 14 seconds later to give Colby the lead for good. With the score 33-27, the White Mules ended the first half on a 23-11 run to build a 56-38 lead at halftime.
The host Eagles got within 13 on another Kendall basket early in the second half, but that is as close as they would get. After that basket, Colby (16-0) made another big run over the next 10:06 of 22-6 to make it 80-51 and put the game out of reach. The White Mules would lead by as many as 31 to stay undefeated on the season, and sending the Eagles to their second straight loss.
Jefferson added four rebounds and Dorion added six to their team high point totals in the Colby win. Dorion also hit 6-9 from three-point territory. Matt Hanna added 12 points, while Weiner had 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench. The Mules shot 50% from the floor, and hit 13-31 from three-point range (42%). Kendall had a game high 31 points and five rebounds in the Husson loss. He hit 13-21 from the field and 4-7 on three-pointers. Thompson added 17 points and six rebounds. The Eagles only shot 41% for the game, 6-24 from three-point range (25%), and 6-13 from the foul line. Husson returns to conference play when they travel to SUNY-Canton for a pair of games Friday and Saturday.
