SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine- In an important game for upcoming playoff seeding, the Southern Maine Community College Seawolves got 20 points from Amanda Brett to cruise past the University of Maine-Augusta Moose 75-49 in Yankee Small College Conference women’s basketball at Southern Maine Community College Wednesday night.
The Seawolves (17-2, 9-2 YSCC) never trailed scoring the first five points of the game. After the Moose came back to even it 7-7, SMCC went on a 14-4 run to close the first quarter up 21-11. UMA (9-5, 7-4) stayed within eight points for almost half of the second quarter, before the hosts would pull away before halftime with another big run of 15-4 to take a 40-21 advantage at intermission.
The Moose looked to be turning things around at the start of the third quarter scoring the first eight points after the break to cut it to 11, but that is as close as they would get. The Seawolves would outscore UMA 23-8 the remainder of the quarter to up the lead to 26. SMCC would lead by as many as 34 in the final quarter to pick up the win and keep them in sole possession of third place in the conference.
Brett added four rebounds and six assists to her game high point total in the win for SMCC. Alija Andrews had 15 points and six rebounds. Tara Flanders had 14 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Ashleigh Mathisen rounded out the double digit scorers with 11 points. Madeline Suhr and Hope Butler each had 11 points for UMA in the loss. Suhr added nine rebounds and four assists, while Butler added four rebounds. Kaeti Butterfield also chipped in seven points and five rebounds, while Sydney Leblanc and Cassidy Lessner contributed six points each. Both teams are ranked in the top 10 in the country in this weeks USCAA Division II women’s coaches poll, with SMCC at #5 and UMA at #8. Both teams also play non-conference matchups in their next game as the Seawolves visit Navy Prep Saturday, and the Moose head back home to host UMaine-Fort Kent on Thursday evening.
