Maeve Carroll had a career high and also a game high 23 points on Wednesday night, as the Maine Black Bears ended a two game losing streak with a 65-47 America East women’s basketball win over the Vermont Catamounts at Patrick Gym in Burlington, Vermont.
Maine (8-13, 4-3 America East) never trailed in the game. The Black Bears had a five point lead about halfway through the first quarter, and then after Vermont cut it to 13-11 Maine ended the opening 10 minutes on an 9-2 run to make it 22-13. The visitors opened up the lead to 15 in the second quarter on a Anna Kahelin jumper, and led by 17 at the half thanks to a late basket by Carroll. Maine continued to build the lead when Kahelin and Carroll each scored four points to begin the third quarter on an 8-0 run for the biggest lead to that point of the game 46-21. The Black Bears would go up as many as 32 on a Dor Saar three-pointer with 6:31 left in the fourth quarter. Vermont (9-10, 3-3) would end the game on an 18-4 run but it was way too late, as Maine pushed their conference record back over .500.
Carroll had a double double, adding 15 rebounds to her point total in the Maine win. Saar had 14 points and four assists. Kelly Fogarty added 12 points, and Maddy McVicar had 10 points and eight rebounds. Hanna Crymble and Emma Utterback each had 15 points and seven rebounds in the loss for Vermont. Maine will host UMBC on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
