Maine puts four in double figures to help defeat Hartford

Anne Simon led all scorers with 18 points on Saturday afternoon, to lead the Maine Black Bears to a 69-52 women’s America East basketball win over Hartford at the Chase Family Arena in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Maine (9-14, 5-4 America East) never trailed in the game scoring the first four points, while the Hawks took 4:23 to pick up their first basket of the day. The Black Bears led by as many as seven and 17-12 after one quarter. The visitors increased the lead in the second getting a Dor Sar jumper, a three-pointer by Simon, and then back to back hoops from Simon and Maeve Carroll to make it 27-14 just 2:24 into the period. Maine led 35-18 when Maddy McVicar hit a three-pointer, and held a 35-24 halftime advantage.

Maine went up 20 early in the third part of a 13-4 run, led by baskets from Simon and Kira Barra, two three-pointers from Sarr, and one from Kelly Fogarty. The Black Bears from that point never led by less than 14, and went up 22 in the fourth on a driving layup by Simon to bounce back for a road win after a disappointing 20 point home loss to UMBC last Sunday.

Simon added five rebounds and two steals to her game high point total in the Maine win. McVicar and Carroll each had 12 points. McVicar added five rebounds, three assists, and two steals while Carroll added four rebounds, a block, and three steals. Saar also got into double figures with 11 points, four rebounds, and seven assists. Hartford in the loss was led by Jada Lucas who was the only one in double figures with 13 points and four rebounds. The Hawks are now 0-22, 0-9 on the season. The Black Bears return home to host Vermont on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
