The Husson basketball teams continued their road trip in Vermont with a stop at Northern Vermont-Lyndon Sunday afternoon. The women continued their NAC dominance, while the men got back in the conference win column in the final seconds of their contest.
In the women’s game, Husson made it 10 straight wins and a 11-0 NAC mark by getting past Lyndon 62-52 led by a double double from Sami Ireland.
Both teams held a first quarter lead with the Eagles leading by the biggest margin of five at 7-2. Husson led 11-9 at the end of the first 10 minutes. The visitors took their biggest first half lead when Cassie Urso knocked down a three-pointer in the second to make it 24-14. They still held a nine point lead late in the quarter before the Hornets scored the last four points to cut it to 31-26 at the break.
Husson (14-7) continued to hold onto their lead in the third. Lyndon cut it to just two points 20 seconds into the quarter, but the Eagles pushed it back to eight and led 46-42 headed to the fourth. The hosts cut it to just a pair again early in the fourth but that is as close as they would get. Husson went up 13 for their biggest lead of the day with 3:23 left on an Ireland layup, and the Hornets never got closer than eight after that.
Ireland had 16 points and 11 rebounds in the Husson win. Emma Alley added 12 points, while Megan Peach came off the bench to score 11 points and grab nine rebounds. Alisha Celley had 18 points and six rebounds in the loss for Lyndon. Faith Poirier also contributed 12 points. The Hornets fall to 7-14, 3-8 in NAC play.
In the men’s game, Justin Thompson had a double double and Scott Lewis came up with two free throws late to push Husson past Lyndon 99-98.
Both teams held a first half lead with Husson leading twice by five points, and Lyndon later grabbing a six point advantage. Thompson completed a three point play late in the half to give the Eagles a 46-44 halftime lead.
Husson led for most of the second half by as many as eight. The Hornets took a lead 59-57 on a jumper by Peyton Olsen with 15:32 left. The hosts never led again until Zach Falkenburg got a layup to go with 22 seconds remaining to make it 98-97. Lewis though got fouled by Falkenburg going to the basket with six seconds showing on the clock. Lewis calmly sank both free throws for the one point Husson lead. Lyndon had one more chance, but Falkenburg had his shot come up short at the buzzer as the Eagles escaped with the win.
Thompson had a team high 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Husson win. Justice Kendall had 20 points and five assists. Lewis came off the bench to score 20 points and grab six rebounds.
