Garling, Martin help Waterville cruise to quarterfinal win

BANGOR, Maine- The Waterville Purple Panthers got a game high 19 points from Sadie Garling, and never trailed jumping out to a 21-4 first quarter lead en route to a 65-32 Maine Principals’ Association Class B North girls quarterfinal win over the Ellsworth Eagles Friday evening at the Cross Insurance Center.

#2 Waterville (18-1) used an 11-0 first quarter run to build the lead from 10-4 to 21-4 on a three-pointer from Abigail Saucier, then two point baskets from Paige St. Pierre, two from Kali Thompson, and also a layup from Maddie Martin. The Panthers led 21-6 after the opening eight minutes. They went on to build the advantage to 19 on one of 5 three-pointers from Garling and led 33-19 at the halftime break.

Waterville scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to take their biggest lead to that point of 24 points when Garling knocked in another from the arc. Ellsworth (11-9) never got closer than 19 the rest of the way, and the 33 point margin was the largest of the day by the Purple Panthers.

Martin helped in the win by adding 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Thompson and Saucier had seven points a piece. Jayda Murray contributed six points, five rebounds, and four assists. Lindsey Given chipped in five points, St. Pierrs four, and Sadie Works two points. Trinity Montigny had 15 points in the loss for 10th seeded Ellsworth. Casey Carter, Samantha Carter, and Kylie Robidoux each had three points a piece, while Morgan Clifford, Sara Shea, Alicia Kelley, and Autumn Paul each chipped in two points a piece. The Eagles outrebounded the Panthers 26-20, but lost the turnover battle 25-13. Waterville was 11-21 at the foul line, while Ellsworth went 3-9. Waterville advances to a 2 p.m. Wednesday semifinal against #3 seeded Presque Isle.
