BANGOR, Maine- The top seeded Hermon Hawks got a late three-pointer from sophomore Charlotte Caron in regulation, and then four more points from her in overtime Saturday morning/afternoon as they outlasted the John Bapst Crusaders 42-34 in a Class B North girls quarterfinal game at the Cross Insurance Center.
Both teams showed great defensive intensity throughout the entire game. #9 seeded John Bapst took an early lead when Savannah Libby and Jamie McQuarrie knocked down first quarter three-pointers to make it 8-4. The Crusaders led 8-6 after the opening eight minutes. The Hawks took just their second lead of the first half when Madison Lebel hit 1-2 from the foul line to make it 9-8. Lacey Scanlon gave the lead back to John Bapst scoring underneath and McQuarrie hit two more three-pointers for their biggest lead of the day at 16-9. The Crusaders led 16-12 at halftime.
Hermon (18-1) took the lead back again when Grace Page hit two from the line to start an 8–0 run lasting into the fourth quarter to give the Hawks a 26-19 bulge early in the final period of regulation. John Bapst though wouldn’t go down easy. The Crusaders used a 12-5 run capped off by two free throws from Sydney Ellis with 2:18 to play to tie it 31-31. John Bapst then took the lead when Jayda Smith scored with 1:30 left, and after a Mercedes Campbell three-pointer went in and out on the Hermon end, Smith would hit 1-2 from the line with 20.1 seconds remaining to make it 34-31. Caron though came up huge for the Hawks scoring the next seven points. After two misses and two offensive rebounds the ball got swung around to the sophomore, who drained the three-pointer from the top of the key with five seconds showing on the clock to send the game to overtime. Caron would then score the first four Hermon points in the extra session on a layup and two from the line, as the Hawks outscored John Bapst 8-0 in the four minute overtime to escape with the win.
Page led Hermon in the win with 14 points and five rebounds. Caron had eight points and six rebounds, while Megan Tracy also had eight with five rebounds. Lebel added six points and 11 rebounds, while Paige Plissey had three, Sydney Gallop had two, and Allison Cameron had one point. The Hawks outrebounded John Bapst 31-28 and shot 19-24 from the foul line. Hermon advances to face Old Town in a Wednesday semifinal at 3:30 p.m.
Lacey Scanlon led John Bapst in the loss with 10 points and four rebounds. McQuarrie ended with nine points. Jamey Satterfield and Smith both added five points a piece, while Libby had three, and Ellis had two points. The Cruasaders shot 7-13 from the line and ends their season with a record of 11-9.
