Maine baseball swept in season opening series

Joe McNamara, Andrew Jenner, Ethan Fewell, and Tyler Baker each had two hits and two RBI each on Sunday afternoon to lead Winthrop University to a 13-4 non-conference baseball win over the Maine Black Bears in Rock Hill, South Carolina to complete the three game weekend sweep.

After a 3-1 loss Friday and a 9-4 setback Saturday, Maine was looking to salvage the final game of the series. Joe Bramanti got the Black Bears off to a good start with a two run double down the left field line to make it 2-0 in the top of the first. The Eagles came right back with a five spot in the bottom of the second. Fewell had an RBI double, CJ Conrad had a sacrifice fly RBI, Fewell scored on an error, McNamara hit an RBI double, and Jenner singled to right for an RBI. Maine cut it to a run in the top of the third when Alex McKenney reached on a fielders choice to score a run, and Bramanti scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-4. The hosts put it away though in the home half of the third highlighted by a Fewell RBI single, a Baker two run triple, and RBI hits from Jenner and Dillon Morton part of a seven run outburst. The Eagles added on another run in the bottom of the fourth and finished off the scoring on a McNamara RBI single to left.

Hernen Sardinas had two hits for Maine (0-3) in the loss, while Bramanti had two driven in. Peter Kemble (0-1) took the loss on the mound allowing five runs (two earned), four hits, and one walk in 2.0 innings. Garrett Gainey (1-0) got the win for Winthrop (3-0) going 2.0 innings allowing three runs, three hits, with two walks, and four strikeouts. Maine heads to North Carolina next weekend beginning on Friday to play in the Campbell University Invitational. The Bears will face Villanova, Purdue, and Campbell on the weekend.
