Alley sisters, Robinson lead Stearns girls to quarterfinal win

BANGOR, Maine- Katherine Alley had 18 points, Annalys Robinson had 13, and Alisyn Alley added 12 more as the top seeded Stearns Minutemen cruised to a 63-40 Maine Principals’ Association Class C girls quarterfinal win over the Central Red Devils Tuesday night at the Cross Insurance Center.

Stearns scored the first five points and Katherine (2) and Alisyn (8) combined for 10 first quarter points as the Minutemen took a 21-7 lead after the opening eight minutes. Central was able to cut the lead to nine twice in the second quarter once at the 3:45 mark and again with 1:15 left, both times on baskets from Emilee Cohen. But K. Alley scored a basket and hit 1-2 from the line, and Makayla Anderson scored on a fast break layup to give Stearns a 14 point cushion at intermission.

The Red Devils had one more push as Abigail Allen scored to cut it to 40-27 early in the third, but the Minutemen again responded with a 14-4 surge to increase the advantage to 54-31 headed to the final eight minutes. Stearns (17-2) would lead by as many as 32 in the final period, and Central only got as close as the final deficit of 23.

K. Alley added five rebounds, Robinson had six rebounds, and A. Alley had six rebounds, three assists, and four steals to go along with their point totals in the Stearns win. Katie Kenyon hit three 3-pointers and finished with nine points and four rebounds. Anderson finished with six points. Kasey Kenyon also chipped in four points, and Maisey Girsa added a free throw for one point. The Minutemen outrebounded the Red Devils 31-17 and shot 12-18 from the foul line.

Cohen led Central in the loss with 16 points and five rebounds. Allen finished with nine points and four rebounds. Also chipping in was Rylee Speed with five points, Alison Shaw with four points and four rebounds, while Tayla Caruso, Grace Campbell, and Gabrielle Poulin had two points each. The Red Devils shot 12-19 from the line and finish their season with a record of 15-5.

Stearns moves on to face #4 seed and unbeaten (20-0) Calais in the semifinals on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
