BANGOR– Jacob Carvell made a three pointer to send the game into overtime and scored three in the extra period to give Central Aroostook a 60-58 win over George Stevens in a Class C boys basketball semifinal on Friday night at the Cross Insurance Center.
The Panthers jumped out to a 15-13 lead after the first quarter behind nine points from Carvell. Central Aroostook went on a 7-2 run to end the first half and take a 30-22 lead into intermission. The Panthers built the lead up to a 12 (36-24) point lead early in the third quarter. Central Aroostook led 42-37 at the end of the third quarter.
Milas Sujica took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points in 4 minutes 52 seconds, before fouling out with 3:08 remaining. Sujica helped George Stevens rally and take a lead of 51-50 when he had to leave the game.
With the Panthers trailing 55-52, Carvell provided the dramatics. Both teams had chances in the last 70 seconds but couldn’t convert. Carvell got the scoring started in overtime by making 1-2 from the line. Carvell added a hoop, and Hayden Kingsbury went 3-4 from the line to help the top seeded Panthers advance.
Sujica led the Eagles with 18 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Caden Mattson added 13 points. David Gadsby also finished in double figures with 11 points. George Stevens ends the season with a record of 18-3.
Carvell scored a game high 24 points for the Panthers. Joshua Thomas put in 15 points, including 2 three pointers in the fourth quarter. Brayden Bradbury filled up the stat sheet with seven points, 13 rebounds, six assists, and two blocks. Central Aroostook (16-4) will play in the regional final on Friday night at 8:45 PM.
