BANGOR– The Southern Aroostook Warriors girls basketball team continued their run of excellence on Saturday morning at the Cross Insurance Center. The Warriors rolled to a 52-33 win over Deer Isle-Stonington to claim their third straight regional championship. The two time defending state champions will play in the state championship game on Saturday, February 29th against Greenville or Valley at the Augusta Civic Center.
Madison Russell scored eight points in the first quarter as Southern Aroostook held a 13-10 lead. The Warriors went 6-8 from the free throw line in the second quarter as they took a 21-14 advantage heading into intermission.
Makaelyn Porter and Kacy Daggett dominated the second half. The duo combined for 20 points, including 14 from Porter. Southern Aroostook shot 8-11 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Brittany Gray led the Mariners with 10 points (2 three pointers), Kayla Morey added seven points (all in the first half). Deer Isle-Stonington ends the season with a 16-3 record.
Porter scored a game high 20 points for the Warriors. She also had four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Russell has 13 points, while Daggett filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals. Southern Aroostook will enter the state championship game with a record of 21-0.
