The Maine men’s basketball make a great bid to upset one of the best teams in America East Saturday afternoon, but came up just short dropping a 54-46 decision to the Stony Brook Seawolves in Stony Brook, New York.
Maine got off to a great start scoring the first six points and grabbing an early 9-2 lead on a Nedeljko Prijovic three-pointer. Stony Brook rallied back and took their first lead on a Miles Latimer three-pointer with 7:20 to go first half 16-13. The Black Bears led 22-19 when Sergio El Darwich hit a three, and Stephane Ingo nailed a jumper with 1:12 left. The Seawolves though scored the last seven points and held a 26-22 lead at halftime.
Maine took back their seven point lead when El Darwich pulled up and drained a three to make it 37-30 with 13:48 to play. The visitors last lead was 46-44 with 4:34 remaining on two free throws from El Darwich. Stony Brook then took the lead for good when Andrew Garcia hit 1-2 from the line, and then Makale Foreman got fouled shooting a three and hit all three free throws with 2:15 showing on the clock making it 48-46. The Seawolves scored the last 10 points in all to improve to 18-10, 9-4 in America East.
El Darwich led Maine in the loss with 18 points and five rebounds. Prijovic had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Ingo scored nine points and grabbed 12 rebounds. The Black Bears drop to 7-20, 3-10 in the conference. Foreman had 16 points, Mouhamadou Gueye had 14, and Latimer and Garcia had 10 points each in the Stony Brook win. Maine will host UNH Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
