Polar Bears Hasson wins WBCA National Player of Year

Bowdoin senior guard Maddie Hasson has been named the 2020 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division III National Player of the Year the school announced on Thursday.

Hasson averaged 16.7 points per game, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.0 assists to lead the 27-2 #2 Polar Bears to their first NESCAC title since 2009, and a berth in the Sweet 16 before the cancellation of the tournament.

She amassed 10 double doubles and scored in double figures in 23 of the 29 games for Bowdoin, and was among the leaders in field goal percentage at 61.7. In eight total games against ranked opponents and in the playoffs, she averaged 21.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per contest making 56% of her shots from the field. She surpassed the 1,000 point plateau on December 30 when she scored 37 points, one point short of the school record.

She was named a first team All-American by the WBCA, and becomes the third Bowdoin player to win this award joining Eileen Flaherty (2007) and Kate Herrigan (2018). Only one other Division III school has had three players garner such an honor (Amherst). Hasson finishes her career with 1,321 points, good for seventh all-time at the school.
