Despite the season ending abruptly with no chance at a playoff run, the postseason honors for now former Maine goalie Jeremy Swayman keep rolling in.
The NCAA announced on Wednesday morning that Swayman is one of 10 finalists for the Mike Richter Award given to the top goalie in Division I men’s ice hockey. The Richter Award is named after the former Wisconsin netminder who went on to play 14 very successful seasons with the New York Rangers.
Swayman in his junior season led the country with 1,099 saves leading his Black Bears to a fourth place finish in Hockey East and what would of been their first home quarterfinal playoff series since 2012. He also sported a 2.07 goals against average and a .939 save percentage while going 18-10-5. The Anchorage, Alaska native is also a top 10 finalist for the biggest award in college hockey the Hobey Baker Award, while already winning Hockey East Player of the Year and the 2020 Walter Brown Award. Swayman has already officially signed with the Boston Bruins organization, forgoing his senior season in Orono. He joins two other Hockey East goalies for the Richter Award in senior Tyler Wall from UMass-Lowell and freshman Spencer Knight from Boston College. The finalists and the winner are chosen by a group of coaches, scouts, and members of the media. The 10 finalists will be cut to five next Monday with the winner announced April 10.
