Legendary NFL head coach Don Shula, who holds the record for most regular season wins and the most wins overall in the history of the league, passed away Monday morning at age 90 according to one of his children.
Shula, who coached the only team to go undefeated in the 1972 Miami Dolphins, racked up 328 regular season wins and 347 all time. He led Miami to back to back titles in 1972-73 and 73-74, and also led the 1968 Baltimore Colts to a championship as well. As a player in 1951 Shula started his career with the Cleveland Browns and also played with the Colts, before finishing up with the Washington Redskins in the 1957 season. He had 21 interceptions in 73 career games as a defensive back. His coaching career began in 1960 as a defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions, before getting his first head coaching job with the Colts and then finished his career in what was his longest tenure with the Dolphins for 26 years from 1970-1995. He is part of the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio for his incredible coaching resume.
He was named the NFL coach of the year in 1964, 1967, and 1968 with Baltimore, and in 1972 during the unblemished 17-0 run with Miami which is still the only undefeated season ever in the league. He was also named Sports Illustrated SportsMan of the Year in 1993, is part of the NFL 1970s all decade team, and also the Miami Dolphins honor roll. Shula was married to Mary Anne Stephens, and also has five children that he had with his first wife Dorothy Bartish who passed away from breast cancer in February 1991. His regular season coaching record of 328-156-6 and final overall record of 347-173-6 both rank first all-time.
