Maine Black Bear goaltender Stephen Mundinger, who just finished his junior season in Orono, has decided to transfer to Long Island University this coming fall for his senior year.
LIU just announced back in April that they would be adding men’s Division I hockey to their athletics department. The Sharks competed in women’s ice hockey for the first time in the 2019-20 season and won a conference title in the New England Women’s Hockey Alliance, upsetting top seed Sacred Heart along the way. The men’s team hasn’t joined a conference yet but the thought is they will be part of the Atlantic Hockey Association, and likely will be playing a 20 game schedule their first season. Brett Riley was named the inaugural head coach at the school. Riley spent time as an assistant at Colgate, and before that was the head coach at Division III Wilkes University.
Mundinger only saw six appearances in net during his time at UMaine, with none this past season. Overall he allowed four goals on 37 shots and didn’t pick up any wins or losses. He leaves with a 3.58 goals against average and an .892 save percentage. The 6 foot 8 and 260 pounder from Smithtown, New York will undoubtedly compete for playing time with the Sharks in their first year as only one other goalie has signed with the team. That other goalie is transfer Vinnie Purpura who just finished his freshman year at Boston University. Purpura only played seven minutes in one game for the Terriers behind top starter Sam Tucker.
