According to multiple reports by ESPN from Ian Rapoport, Chris Mortenson, and Adam Schefter, free agent quarterback and former Carolina Panther Cam Newton has agreed to sign a one year incentive based contract with the New England Patriots.

Newton last played last September 12 in a 20-14 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He then missed the remainder of the season with a ankle injury, after also missing time in 2018 with the same type of ankle problem. He was released by the team on March 24. Overall he started 124 of 125 career games for Carolina in nine seasons with the organization. He completed 59.6% of his passes, tossing 182 touchdowns and also 108 interceptions. He won the league MVP in the 2015-16 season throwing 35 TDs against only 10 interceptions leading the Panthers to a 15-1 regular season mark and a division title, where they eventually fell 24-10 to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.

Newton has a chance to earn up to 7.5 million in this incentive based only contract according to reports. He will compete in camp with both Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer, as New England looks to replace 20 year veteran Tom Brady who signed with Tampa Bay in the offseason.
