UMaine, Husson postpone 2020 fall athletics

Both the University of Maine in Orono and Husson University in Bangor both announced on Friday that they will be postponing athletic competition for the 2020 fall season.

The schools are added to a list of other Maine colleges that have postponed sports for the fall amid the coronavirus pandemic, with hopes to play them in the spring semester. UMaine competes in the America East in the fall with men’s and women’s cross country, soccer, and field hockey and in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with football. This was to be the inaugural season for Husson in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) for football, while the Eagles are in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s and women’s golf, and women’s tennis. The field hockey team who is in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) had already postponed their season. Maine Maritime Academy and the University of New England also postponed their fall sports on Friday, while Thomas College in Waterville and the University of Maine-Presque Isle who are also a part of the NAC are expected to do the same. An announcement on winter sports that includes men’s and women’s basketball at the two schools, and also men’s and women’s ice hockey at UMaine are expected at a later date.
