July 27, 2020

The New York Mets built a 7-0 fourth inning lead Monday night at Fenway Park, and then held on to defeat the Boston Red Sox 7-4 in the first of four straight Interleague games between the two teams in a home and home. Boston has now lost three straight games since an opening night 13-2 win over Baltimore last Friday.

Michael Conforto got things started for the Mets (2-2) when he blasted a 434 foot homer to right field off Boston starter Josh Osich in the second inning. Reigning Rookie of the Year Pete Alonso launched a third inning line drive over the Green Monster in left with a man on to make it 4-0. Dominic Smith extended the New York lead to seven in the fourth when he lifted a two out, three run blast over the center field wall. Mitch Moreland and Xander Bogaerts each hit solo homers for Boston (1-3) in the fourth and sixth innings. Bogaerts and Moreland also added RBI singles in the eighth for the Red Sox scoring.

Osich (0-1) took the loss allowing two runs on two hits in 2.0 innings as the starter. Jeffrey Springs went the next 1.1 innings and allowed five runs on four hits. Recently acquired right hander Zack Godley pitched well in relief allowing no runs on four hits in 4.0 innings with seven strikeouts. Moreland had two hits and two RBI to lead the offense. Michael Wacha (1-0) allowed just a run on five hits in 5.0 innings to pick up the pitching win for New York. Amed Rosario, Jeff McNeil, and Wilson Ramos each had two hits in the victory.

Game two is set for a 7:35 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday, as Boston sends lefty Matt Hall to the hill to go against New York who counters with David Peterson.
