The Boston Red Sox hit three homeruns Friday night and built a 8-0 lead, on their way to a third win in a row by holding off the Baltimore Orioles 8-5 at Camden Yards.
Xander Bogaerts hit a solo homer to center in the second inning, and JD Martinez also lined a two run shot in the third over the center field fence to make it 3-0. Rafael Devers provided the game winner when he launched his fourth homer of the season, a three run bomb in the fifth for a comfortable 6-0 lead. Michael Chavis finished off the Boston scoring in the sixth with a two run single. Baltimore pulled close by getting solo homeruns from Pat Valaika and Cedric Mullins in the seventh, and then a three run long ball from Chance Sisco in the eighth. Mullins began the bottom of the ninth with a single, but Sox reliever Matt Barnes retired the next three batters to end it and pick up his first save.
Darwinzon Hernandez (1-0) got the win with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. Colten Brewer started the game and didn’t allow a run on three hits in 4.0 innings. Alex Verdugo had two hits as Boston improved to 9-18. John Means (0-2) allowed three runs on four hits in 3.0 innings to take the loss for Baltimore, who lost their sixth straight game dropping to 12-14. Mullins had three hits to lead the Birds offense. The Sox also announced a trade with the Phillies Friday night, sending closer Brandon Workman and reliever Heath Embree to Philly along with $800,000 in cash and a future player to be named, in exchange for right handed pitcher Nick Pivetta and promising pitching prospect Connor Seabold. Martin Perez will start for Boston Saturday night at 7:35 in game three of a four game series, while Alex Cobb takes the ball for Baltimore.
