After seven seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, former NBA guard and Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers has been fired. Rivers announced it on Monday via his Twitter account.
Los Angeles had high aspirations this season after acquiring Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in free agency. They were one of the favorites to win the NBA title in 2019-20. The Clippers lost a 3-1 series lead in the Western Conference semifinals, falling to the Denver Nuggets. Rivers did help build the organization into a contender. When he arrived for the 2013-14 season the roster consisted of Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, JJ Reddick, and DeAndre Jordan. He leaves as the 11th winningest coach in Clippers history.
Rivers is 943-681 overall as an NBA coach between Orlando, Boston, and LA. His career highlight was leading the Celtics to an NBA title in 2007-08, and also another Eastern Conference championship in 2009-10 where Boston fell to the LA Lakers in the Finals.
