EAST CORINTH- Bryce Burns and Cameron Gooley each scored a pair of goals and Alex Hewitt added three assists Friday afternoon, leading the Central Red Devils boys soccer team to a 5-2 win over the Pisquataquis Community High School Pirates (PCHS) on a rain soaked field at Central High School.
The goal scoring was fast and furious early on. Burns made it 1-0 Central just 1:49 into the game on an assist from Hewitt. Christian Homchuck tied it though for PCHS just over two minutes later on a helper from Kobe Gilbert. The Devils took control after that, as Gooley scored at 9:13 on another Hewitt assist. Central (2-1) got another Gooley goal just over eight minutes later unassisted, and then made it a 4-1 halftime lead when Burns scored his second of the day also unassisted with 2:22 to go before the break. Hewitts third assist of the day was a perfect throw-in near the box in front of the goal, that was kicked in by Simon Allen 5:32 into the second half to extend the lead to 5-1. Gilbert got his sixth goal of the season in just the second game for PCHS (1-1) late in the contest with 1:05 left to end the scoring.
In the goal for Central Scott Ferrie played most of the game, and Jeb Young came in for relief halfway through the second half as the two netminders combined for eight saves. Trevor Hathorn had 12 saves for PCHS, as the Pirates were outshot 22-11. The Red Devils have scored 18 goals in three games this season. Central also honored these nine seniors on Senior Day before the game- Hewitt, Gooley, Ferrie, Malachi Miller, Jack Miller, Noah Kepple, Colby Kelly, Liam Velgouse, and Matt Albert.
