CAA sets tentative plans for spring 2021 football

October 5, 2020

When the fall football season in the Colonial Athletic Association was postponed back on July 17th, talks were to schedule a spring season to make up for the 2020 campaign. Last week that happened, as the CAA has made tentative plans for that to occur.

The league announced that teams will play six conference games and also up to two non-league contests. The CAA will be broken into a North and South division, and schools will play teams in their division twice. League play will be scheduled to begin March 6 and end April 17. Schools are permitted to play non-league games as early as January 23. They can schedule another CAA opponent from another division, but those games will count as non-conference and not count towards the CAA standings or tiebreaking procedures. The team with the best overall CAA record will get an automatic bid into the FCS National Tournament. The FCS Playoffs will consist of 11 automatic qualifiers and five at large bids.

The University of Maine is coming off a 6-6 record (4-4 CAA) in the 2019 season. The Black Bears will be led by quarterback Joe Fagnano, and will lean on a solid defense that includes the return of linebacker Deshawn Stevens. The schedules will soon be released by the CAA in the coming weeks. Below is the press release from September 30 from the league-
