October 22, 2020

At Howland, the top seed PVHS Howlers hosted the #4 seed Penquis Patriots in a Covid Cup semi-final match. Penobscot Valley won the two previous matches on the season. In this meeting the Howlers also prevailed as they held off the Patriots for a 2-0 victory.

The teams battled scoreless for the first 20 minutes. With 16:35 minutes remaining in the half, Ali Gilman sent a 30-yard cross to a cutting Holly Loring. Loring received the pass then quickly sent a blast to the back of the net for the 1-0 Howler lead. With six minutes left to go in the half, Emma Buck scored off a Rebecca Carson corner kick.

Penobscot Valley defense managed to hold Penquis to one shot on goal each half to secure the victory. The Howlers continued a relentless offensive attack, recording 25 shot on net in the first half and 15 in the second half. For Penobscot Valley (8-1), Emilee Ireland earned the shutout. The Howlers face the Schenck Wolverines next Tuesday for the Covid Cup. Penquis keeper Hope Lovell ended the night with 29 saves, and the Patriots will play Mattanawcook Academy next week in the consolation game.
