Peyton Grant scored four goals in a Dexter Tigers 7-1 girls soccer win over MCI on October 23rd. On her second goal of the contest, Grant broke a Dexter girls soccer scoring record. Grant scored two more to finish her career with 66 goals.
“It was pretty cool. It was a good ending. For all the challenges we faced this season,”Grant said. “I really didn’t think going into my freshmen year that I would be able to do this. My role on the team changed. My first two years I was a facilitator,”
In Grant’s Junior year, she broke the school single season record with 29 goals.
“The last two years I have been more of a scorer. I wouldn’t be able to do that without my teammates. The past few years our defense has been really strong, they always look to get me the ball, “Grant said. “They do the things that people don’t notice that win games. They don’t get the recognition that they deserve.”
Grant’s teammate her first two seasons Hannah Dorman held the previous record with 63 goals in 64 games. Grant scored her 66 goals in 58 career games. Dorman passed Lindsay Turner, who scored 53 goals from 1999-2002 for the Tigers. Grant finished with 25 career assists. Turner holds the school record with 27 assists
“I knew coming into the season that I needed 20 something goals, but I didn’t once keep track after games or I need this many goals. I didn’t even know going into the MCI game that I had a chance to break it,”Grant said. “I will always remember this season, I am just very thankful. I don’t know what I would have done if we couldn’t have a season. I am thankful that everyone did their part to make this season possible.”
This week, it was announced that Grant received the annual Heisman Scholarship Award. Grant won athlete of the week honors twice during this fall season. Check out the interviews below.
