In an announcement by the University of Maine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy on Wednesday afternoon, the University of Maine Men’s ice hockey team will not be playing their scheduled season openers against #7 University of Massachusetts this Friday and Saturday night at the Alfond Arena in Orono.
The team is now scheduled to play their opener next Friday night at 6 p.m. when they travel to Storrs, Connecticut to battle the UConn Huskies in a two game series. The women’s ice hockey team is still on this weekend and scheduled to play at Holy Cross to open up their 2020-21 season on Friday night at 6, and Saturday at 1 p.m. Hockey East said when they released the schedules that weekends will be open at the end of the season to make up for any postponements.
Ferrini-Mundy said in a statement, “We are incredibly proud of our student athletes and very much want to see our Maine Black Bears begin their winter seasons. We are assessing each opportunity for our teams to compete within the context of rising COVID case counts and the threat of community transmission. We are working with our athletic conferences, UMaine Athletics, our safety professionals and stakeholders to determine next steps for our teams.”
