Celtics give Tatum five year extension

November 23, 2020

The Boston Celtics have extended one of their superstar players. Boston gave Jayson Tatum a five year extension on Sunday, keeping him in Beantown until at least through the 2024-25 season.

The deal is reportedly worth $163 million, but Tatum would receive a 30% boost in that deal if he makes All-NBA first, second, or third team this coming season for a total of $195 million. The former Duke University star joins fellow teammate Jaylen Brown who is already under contract with the team until the end of the 2023-24 season, giving them one of the best young foundations in the league. Tatum who is only 22 years of age, averaged 23.4 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.4 steals per game this past season and boosted his three point attempts from 3.9 in 2018-19 to 7.1 in 2019-20. He would have a player option at the end of the fourth year in 2025.

The announcement of an extension comes at a busy time for the club, as they lost Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets in free agency, traded Enes Kanter, and also signed Tristan Thompson and Jeff Teague as free agent acquisitions.
