Ally Johnson scored two goals and goaltender Loryn Porter made 33 saves on Saturday evening, as the Maine women’s ice hockey team upset the #7 Providence College Friars 2-1 at Schneider Arena in Providence, Rhode Island in Hockey East play.
Maine (4-2-0, 4-2-0 Hockey East) would strike first when Ida Press would fire a slapshot through traffic from the point on the powerplay that was tipped in front by Johnson past Providence goalie Sanda Abstreiter at 16:47 of the first to make it 1-0 Black Bears. The score would stay the same until a Friars powerplay would help them even things late in the second. Bailey Burton would take it behind her own net and go the length of the ice, and beat Porter with a beautiful backhanded shot from just inside the left faceoff circle at 15:57. Johnson was in the right place at the right time for her second of the day to give the visitors the lead back by slamming home a rebound in the slot 5:22 into the third period for the game winner. PC had some good looks the rest of the way, including with the goalie pulled in the final minute but couldn’t find the equalizer ending a five game win streak and falling for the first time in the 2020-21 season (6-1-1, 6-1-1).
Press, Ella Maclean, Celine Tedenby, and Ida Kuoppala each had an assist in the win for Maine. Both teams were 1-4 on the powerplay. Abstreiter had 29 saves and assisted on the Providence goal in the loss. Chloe Gonsalves also added an assist. The Black Bears are now off until Friday, January 8 when they open a two game series with the Vermont Catamounts.
