The Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates girls basketball team has a strong nucleus returning from a squad that went 9-9 last season.
“We return four of five last year’s starters and seven that saw significant time last year. We are pretty versatile with many players possessing the ability to play multiple positions,”PCHS coach Brian Gaw said. “We have good competition for playing time with 7-8 players looking for starting positions.”
Despite the strong returning group, depth could be an issue for PCHS. Meagen Lemieux is the lone senior. The junior trio of Sydney Hutchins, Elizabeth Kendall and Martina Hill are also returning starters for Gaw.
There will be plenty of competition for playing time.
“Hailee Harford, Brylee Ricker, Abbey Ricker, Kendal Kimball and Lauren Robinson are competing not only for playing time but to break into the starting line up,”Gaw said. “Freshman Emily Easler is working very hard to try and catch up with no summer program last year and limited preseason.”
Covid-19 has had an impact on everyone and it will be no different for high school basketball players around the state.
“I’m certain it is not unique to us but playing with a mask on has been very challenging,”Gaw said. “We had 2-3 players opt out of the season for personal reasons. They will be difficult to replace as the season progresses.”
Teams have been reduced to a 12 game schedule this season. Eastern Maine Sports Media will have live coverage of the Pirates games on January 19th at Dexter and February 17th when PCHS plays host to PVHS. Click here for the full EMSM broadcast schedule.
