The basketball teams from the University of Maine-Augusta returned to the floor for the first time in nearly a year this weekend at the UMA Fitness Center in Bangor against the University of Maine-Presque Isle.
In the women’s game on Saturday, UMPI (1-1) got 28 points on 8 three-pointers from Emily Wheaton to take down the Moose 87-69.
UMA got 18 points from Sydney LeBlanc and 17 points a piece from Hope Butler and Kaeti Butterfield. Madeline Suhr also chipped in 15. The Moose travel north Saturday to face UMaine-Fort Kent.
In the men’s contest on Sunday, Jason Coleman was able to win his collegiate coaching debut as the Moose rallied past UMPI 67-65.
Nate Henderson hit the game winning shot for UMA with 9.3 seconds remaining, as the hosts rallied from a seven point halftime deficit. Henderson led the way with 15 points, while former Orono and Bangor standout Sam Martin had 12 points and six rebounds. Also getting into double figures was Jovan Sisovic with 11 points, and Jalaughn Jackson with 10 points, 11 assists, and seven steals. Griffin Guerrette led the Owls (0-3) in the loss with 23 points on 5 three-pointers, and also adding six assists. UMA plays against the University of New England on Saturday on 5 p.m.
