Josie Rossbach scored with 1:18 left in the game on Friday afternoon, leading the University of Massachusetts Minutemen to a 2-1 non-conference field hockey win over the University of Maine at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex in Amherst, Massachusetts.
After a scoreless first half, Maine (0-2) struck first. Tereza Holubcova scored her second of the season 1:12 into the third quarter unassisted. Jess Beech tied it for UMass 4:11 later on a penalty stroke goal. The Black Bears had some great chances in the fourth quarter when they had a stretch of five straight penalty corners, but Minutemen goalie Brooke Richards made several key stops to keep it tied. The game winner from Rossbach came on a penalty corner and rebound in front of Maine goalie Mia Borley.
Borley made five saves on seven shots in the loss. UMass (3-1) had seven corners to six for Maine. Richards had five saves in the win for the Minutemen. The Black Bears open up America East play when they travel to UMass-Lowell next Friday.
