Maine softball swept, baseball splits Saturday doubleheader

The University of Maine baseball team continued non-conference play on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at Wagner College, while softball opened their season with a pair of games in non-conference at Merrimack.

The softball team made the trip to Martone-Mejail Field in North Andover, Massachusetts to open up their 2021 slate, but were swept in a pair of games 3-0 and 3-2.

The Black Bears were held to one hit in a shutout loss in game one. Caitlyn Fallon took the loss in the circle for Maine, allowing two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings. Madie Fornwalt hit an RBI sacrifice fly, Abigail Amato hit a solo homerun, and Danielle Carmody had an infield RBI single for the Warriors. Fallon had an RBI single and Kya Enos reached on an error that scored an unearned run in the game two loss. Kelly Dovi had an RBI single and also reached on an error that scored a run later, and Courtney Lanpher had an infield RBI single as Merrimack got their first victories of 2021 (2-4). Gabbie Siciliano took the loss in the circle, allowing two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.

At MCU Park in Brooklyn, New York the baseball team split their doubleheader, winning 5-1 and then dropping the second 6-2 against Wagner College.

Maine was trailing 1-0 in the first game until the sixth inning when Sean Lawlor hit a game tying solo homerun, and later in the inning Jake Rainess hit a grand slam to provide the difference. Lawlor, Joe Bramanti, and Connor Goodman had two hits a piece, and Nicholas Sincola (2-0) was outstanding once again on the hill, allowing just a run on two hits with 12 strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Goodman had an RBI groundout, and Scout Knotts had an RBI sacrifice fly in the game two loss. Quinn McDaniel and Jeff Mejia had three hits a piece. Jared Guillen (two run single), Dimaggio Cazares (RBI single), Jake Lutz (RBI single), Mike Ruggiero (RBI double), and Henry Martinez (RBI single) provided the offense for the Wagner College Seahawks as they improve to 2-2. Noah Lewis (1-1) took the game two pitching loss for Maine, allowing two earned runs on five hits in 5.2 innings.

On Sunday, Maine (4-3) will finish off the three game series in New York against Wagner College beginning at 12 p.m., while softball seeks their first win at 12 when they travel to Sacred Heart for two games.
