Maine baseball wins series, softball splits on Sunday

Sean Lawlor and Jake Rainess had three RBI each Sunday afternoon, as the Maine Black Bears scored six runs in the fourth and another five in the eighth inning as they pulled away from the Wagner College Seahawks 12-3 at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY in non-conference baseball action.

Wagner College (2-3) took an early 1-0 lead before Rainess hit a three run homer and Lawlor hit a three run double in the fourth to give Maine (5-3) the lead for good. Connor Goodman added three hits, and Jeff Mejia had two RBI as well as the Black Bears took the series 2-1 after a Saturday doubleheader split. Michael Bacica started on the mound and got a no decision, allowing one run on three hits in 2.0 innings. Former Hampden Academy standout Alex McKenney (2-0) won in relief, allowing no runs on one hit with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Maine will begin America East play with a four game series at pre-season favorite Stony Brook, starting with a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m.

At Pioneer Park in Fairfield, Connecticut the Maine softball team won their first game of game of 2021 season by splitting a doubleheader with Sacred Heart, winning game one 8-2 and dropping the second 10-5.

Caitlyn Fallon had a solo homerun, and Kelby Drews had a pair of homers and four RBI to lead the Black Bears to their first win. Shanna Scribner also added a two run inside the park homerun. Drews had three hits, while Fallon, Mariah Pearson, Kya Enos, Keely Clark, and Grace McGouldrick had two a piece. Kyleigh O’Donnell (1-0) won in the circle, allowing two runs on one hit with seven strikeouts in the complete 7.0 inning effort. In the second game, Sacred Heart (2-6) hit four homeruns to pull away for a five run win. Emma Larke and Makayla Livingston had two RBI for Maine (1-3). Fallon (0-2) was tagged with the loss in the circle, allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings. The Black Bears continue non-conference play with a doubleheader at Fordham on Saturday at 12 p.m.
