Poppy Lambert had a first quarter goal that proved to be the game winner Saturday afternoon, as the Maine Black Bears topped the University of California Golden Bears 1-0 in America East Field Hockey action in a neutral site game played at Lowell, Massachusetts.
Lambert scored off a penalty corner on assists from Brittany Smith and Tereza Holubcova at 9:02 of the opening period. That is all Maine (2-2, 2-0 America East) would need as they held Cal to just one shot on goal in the contest.
Mia Borley recorded the shutout in goal for the Black Bears, as Maine attempted nine shots to six for the Golden Bears. Cato Knipping made five saves in the loss for California (1-2, 0-1 AE). Maine returns home to host Vermont Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
