The Maine softball team continued non-conference play on Wednesday afternoon with a pair of games with Holy Cross at Freshman Field in Worcester, Massachusetts.
In game one, Erin Bengston knocked in three runs and Megan Yuchick (1-3) won her first game of the season in the circle for a 5-1 Holy Cross win. Mariah Pearson knocked in the run for Maine with an RBI double in the seventh inning. Caitlyn Fallon (0-5) lost in the circle for the Black Bears allowing five runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Yurchick didn’t allow an earned run and scattered five hits in the complete 7.0 inning effort.
In game two, the host Crusaders got a two run first inning homerun from Jessie Nagel and coasted to the doubleheader sweep with a 3-0 victory. Bella Jankowski added a sixth inning RBI double as Holy Cross improves to 4-4 on the season. Maine (2-10) was held to just two hits, and Kyleigh O’Donnell (2-2) took the pitching loss allowing three runs on four hits in 6.0 innings. Kelly Nelson (3-1) had the second dominant pitching performance of the day for the winners going the full 7.0 innings with 11 strikeouts.
Maine will now open up America East Conference action as they travel to UMass-Lowell. A doubleheader kicks off the three game weekend series Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
