Monmouth holds off Maine Field Hockey

The Monmouth Hawks built a 3-0 lead early in the third quarter on Friday, and then held off the Maine Black Bears 3-2 in America East Field Hockey action in West Long Branch, New Jersey.

Mackenzie McKillop scored on a one timer to open the scoring at 11:02 of the first quarter. Annick van Lange doubled the lead at halftime for Monmouth (7-2, 5-1 America East) with a tally 8:03 into the second. The Hawks took a 3-0 advantage when van Lange got her second of the day, breaking in on Maine goalie Mia Borley and scoring from about 25 yards out 1:20 into the third. The visiting Black Bears made a valiant effort to try to extend their four game winning streak. Brooke Sulinski made it 3-1 at the 9:13 mark of the quarter, and then scored again 9:03 into the fourth to bring Maine within a goal. The Bears however couldn’t find the equalizer, taking their first conference loss of the spring season.

Borley made four saves on the day for Maine, who had their record drop to 4-3 overall and 4-1 in America East. Tereza Holubcova and Chloe Walton each had an assist on the day. Kate O’Hogan had three stops in the cage for Monmouth in the win. The Black Bears have three regular season games remaining, all in conference, hosting Albany in their next scheduled contest on Sunday, April 11.
