Brandon Smith had four RBI, and Jackson Curtis added three more on Thursday afternoon as the Husson Eagles cruised to an 8-0 win over the University of Maine-Farmington at Hippach Field in Farmington in the North Atlantic Conference baseball opener for both teams.
With two outs in the top of the first inning, Smith hit a two run double to left center, and Curtis followed with a double down the third base line to score Smith to make it 3-0 Eagles. Curtis made it 5-0 with a two out, two run double in the fifth. Three more runs in the seventh inning finished off the scoring. An unearned run on an error by the UMF right fielder make it 6-0, and then Smith capped off his four RBI day with a two run homerun to center field. It was the first homerun of the spring for Husson. It was also the first game for Husson since dropping four games in non-conference to USM back on March 20-21.
Along with three hits from Curtis and two from Smith, David Leblanc also had two hits as Husson improved to 1-4 (1-0 NAC). Harris Lendrum (1-0) started on the mound and got the win for the Eagles and didn’t allow a run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 4.0 innings in his second collegiate start. Andrew Hopkins had two hits for UMF (0-2, 0-1 NAC). Aaron Goschke (0-1) allowed five runs on six hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings in the loss for the Beavers in his college debut. The teams are scheduled to play a pair of conference doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday in Bangor at the Winkin Complex.
