Freshman Poppy Lambert scored both goals on Sunday afternoon, as the Maine Black Bears defeated the Albany Great Danes 2-1 in America East Field Hockey action at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono.
Lambert scored her first of the day on a penalty stroke tally with 4:40 left in the second quarter, and Maine led 1-0 at halftime. Off a corner on assists from Tereza Holubcova and Brooke Sulinski, Lambert netted the eventual game winner 5:59 into the third quarter. UAlbany (5-3, 4-2 in America East) would score their only goal just 25 seconds later when senior Katie MacCallum tallied her first marker of the season, but couldn’t find the equalizer as the Black Bears bounced back after their first conference loss to Monmouth last week. Maine is now 5-3, 5-1 in the conference and likely will be ranked in the Top 25 when the new Division I rankings come out this week.
Mia Borley made five saves in goal for Maine in the win. Albany outchanced the Black Bears with attempted shots 14-6, and in corners 9-2. Sheridan Messier made three stops in goal for the Great Danes. Maine will head to Durham, New Hampshire to face off with Stanford in a neutral site America East Conference game on Thursday afternoon.
