Matsuyama becomes first Japanese golfer to win the Masters

April 12, 2021

Japans Hideki Matsuyama held off United States 24 year old rookie Will Zalatoris (-9) by one stroke on Sunday, winning the 2021 Masters Tournament at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia.

Matsuyama (-10) is the first Japenese golfer to win the Masters, and the first from that country to ever win a major tournament. He is only the second to hail from an Asian nation to win a major, joining Y.E. Yang of South Korea who won the 2009 PGA Championship. He had a four shot lead entering Sundays play, and saw it cut it to a single stroke before rebounding for a six stroke advantage. Matsuyama made it interesting down the stretch when his ball found the water on the 15th hole, but would hold off the pack. United States golfers Xander Schauffele and Jordan Speith both finished three back for the tournament (-7).

The best finishes for Matsuyama before Sunday were four top five finishes in major tournaments from 2015-2017, including fifth in the 2015 Masters.
