Chloe Walton scored with 1:41 left in regulation Thursday afternoon, as the Maine Black Bears upset the #16 Stanford Cardinal in America East Field Hockey action in a neutral site game played at the University of New Hampshire.
Stanford (7-1, 5-1 America East) scored early to take the lead on a shot that was re-directed into the net by Juli Porto at 2:32 of the opening quarter. Brooke Sulinski evened it for Maine off an assist from Madisyn Hartley at 5:19. The teams didn’t score for the rest of the first half, and it was 1-1 at the halftime break. Leading scorer Corinne Zanolli regained the advantage for the Cardinal, with her 12th of the season 26 seconds into the third quarter. Julia Ross answered that to make it 2-2, scoring her first goal of the spring season with 2:56 left in that third period. Walton would score her 5th marker of the spring late in the fourth, sending Stanford to their first loss of the year.
Mia Borley made two saves in net in the Maine win, as they outshot Stanford 7-4. Hannah Santos made four saves in the Stanford goal. The Black Bears improve to 6-3, 6-1 in America East play and have officially clinched a spot in the upcoming four team conference playoffs. The Cardinal had won six of their seven games by three goals or more entering Thursdays contest. Maine finishes their regular season when they host the University of California-Davis on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. in Orono.
