Maine softball sweeps doubleheader, takes three of four with Binghamton

The University of Maine softball team made it three out of four wins on the weekend by sweeping an America East doubleheader on Sunday over Binghamton at the Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal, New York. The Black Bears won the first game 3-2, before taking game two by a score of 8-2.

In game one, Binghamton got off to an early 2-0 lead on a two run homer by Mikayla Alvarez in the bottom of the first inning. Maine got one back on an RBI double from Mariah Pearson in the top of the second, and then tied it on a fielders choice RBI groundout by Pearson in the fourth. Izzy Nieblas got the game winner with an RBI double in the fifth inning. Nieblas had two hits, while Pearson had the two key RBI. Kyleigh O’Donnell (8-2) went the distance to pick up the win in the circle allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

The Black Bears got the offense going early in game two when Nieblas hit a two run double and Kelby Drews nailed a two run homerun in the top of the first. Maine added on with a two run single from Amanda Nee and an RBI sacrifice fly from Rebecca Findlay to make it 7-0 in the second inning. Drews had two hits and three RBI to help complete the sweep, while Kya Enos also added two hits. Emily Reid (1-1) got the pitching victory allowing no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings. Maine is now 10-14, 7-3 in America East. Binghamton 7-9, 3-9 AE.

Next up Maine will return home to Orono to face first place Stony Brook for a three game series beginning with a doubleheader next Saturday at 12 p.m. The Seawolves will enter play with a 5-0 conference record.
