April 19, 2021

The Boston Red Sox salvaged a four game split with the Chicago White Sox on Monday, getting out to an early lead and pounding out 17 hits cruising to an 11-4 victory in the annual Patriots Day game at Fenway Park.

The scoring got started early as Chicago (8-9) took their only lead on an RBI double from Luis Robert in the top of the first inning. Boston jumped on White Sox ace starter Lucas Giolito in the home half of the first. Enrique ‘Kike’ Hernandez led off by hitting an 0-2 pitch just over the green monster in left to tie it 1-1. The Red Sox (11-6) would send 11 batters to the plate scoring six runs as Rafael Devers and Marwin Gonzalez had RBI singles, Hunter Renfoe an RBI groundout, and Franchy Cordero a two run single. JD Martinez hit a long solo homerun to left in the second, and Devers then walked ending the day for Giolito. Alex Verdugo hit his third homerun of the season, a solo shot over the bullpen in right center in the third inning. Chicago could only get as close as six runs the rest of the way.

Verdugo, Martinez, and Christian Vazquez all had three hits a piece. Devers and Cordero added two hits each, with Martinez, Renfroe, and Cordero finishing with two RBI. Nathan Eovaldi (3-1) won on the mound allowing four runs on nine hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings. It is the fourth time in his career with a 10 strikeout game. Tim Anderson had three hits for Chicago, while Adam Eaton knocked in three of their four runs with two hits. Giolito (1-1) was charged with eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 1.0+ inning to take the loss. Boston opens up a short two game series at Fenway Tuesday night against Toronto. A pair of good left handers toe the rubber in the first game with Eduardo Rodriguez going for the Red Sox against Hyun Jin Ryu for the Blue Jays.
