The Boston Red Sox scored four times in the fourth inning on Tuesday night, and Eduardo Rodriguez pitched into the top of the seventh inning en route to a 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in the first of a short two game series at Fenway Park.
Boston (12-6) fell behind when Bo Bichette hit a long solo homer to left over everything in the top of the fourth. It was was 5th homerun of the season for Bichette. The Sox did all their scoring though in the bottom half of the inning. Christian Arroyo and JD Martinez led off with singles, and then Xander Bogaerts lifted his first homer of the season to center field for the game winner and a 3-1 lead. Marwin Gonzalez doubled with one out, and then with two outs Bobby Dalbec knocked in Gonzalez with a triple to deep center near the 420 foot marker. Toronto (7-10) got one back when Randal Grichuk led off the seventh with a solo homer to left, ending the night for Rodriguez. Some solid bullpen work would wrap up the Red Sox win, as Matt Andriese and Adam Ottavino both got holds and Matt Barnes picked up his third save.
Arroyo had three hits, while Bogaerts and Dalbec had two a piece. Rodriguez (3-0) pitching in his first game at home since September 29, 2019 was charged with two runs on three hits in 6.0+ innings with one walk and six strikeouts. Bichette and Grichuk accounted for all the Toronto hits with two a piece. Hjun Jin Ryu (1-2) gave up four runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings to take the loss. The teams are scheduled to play again at Fenway on Wednesday night at 7:10 p.m.
