At Citi Field in Flushing Meadow, New York on Wednesday night the Boston Red Sox got another great pitching performance this time by Nick Pivetta and slipped past Jacob deGrom and the New York Mets 1-0.
deGrom (2-2) was excellent once again, allowing just one runs on three hits with nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings in the loss as the Mets fell to 9-10. The game winner came in the second inning when Xander Bogaerts led off with a double, and then with one out Christian Vazquez doubled in Bogaerts for the only run Boston (16-9) needed in sweeping the two game interleague series. Pivetta (3-0) allowed no runs on one hit with three walks and seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings to get the win. Garrett Whitlock got his third hold striking out four in 2.0 innings, Adam Ottavino his fifth hold with a perfect eighth inning, and Matt Barnes got his sixth save striking out the side in the ninth. Rafael Devers had two hits on the night. The Sox start a four game series in Texas against the Rangers on Thursday night.
At TD Garden in Boston, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum combined for 73 points as the Boston Celtics ended a three game losing streak with a 120-111 win over the Charlotte Hornets.
Boston (33-30) broke open a close game early and used a 30-11 run to end the first quarter for a 39-19 advantage. Charlotte (30-32) got within three points twice in the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws and also a three-pointer from former Celtic Terry Rozier, but the C’s held on down the stretch. Brown led the way with a game high 38 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. He shot 13-23 from the floor (7-13 three-point range). Tatum finished with 35 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Aaron Nesmith had a career high 15 points and also added nine rebounds, while Tristan Thompson had a double double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Devonte Graham had 25 points, five rebounds, and seven assists for the Hornets. Boston will host the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night.
