The Boston Red Sox took advantage of four errors on Thursday afternoon, scoring seven unearned runs off those miscues to get past the Detroit Tigers 12-9 at Fenway Park in the rubber game of a three game set.
Franchy Cordero, who entered the game for Enrique Hernandez who left with an injury in the second inning, ended an 0-25 slump at the plate with a 3-5 day with an RBI. In a back and forth game all afternoon and trailing 9-8 in the eighth inning, Boston would tie it on an RBI single by Christian Vazquez. Cordero would reach on the fourth error by Detroit allowing Christian Arroyo to score to give the Sox the lead for good. Alex Verdugo added some insurance with a two run single.
Rafael Devers had two hits and three RBI, while Verdugo and JD Martinez each had two hits and two RBI. Xander Bogaerts had two hits and one knocked in, as did Kevin Plawecki in the victory for Boston (19-13). Nathan Eovaldi got a no decision allowing six runs on seven hits on the mound in 4.1 innings. Matt Andriese (1-1) got the win in relief and Adam Ottavino picked up his first save of the season. Harold Castro and Jeimer Candelerio had three hits each for Detroit (9-23), while Jonathan Schoop, Wilson Ramos, and Niko Goodrum had two a piece. Alex Lange (0-1) got a blown save and the loss in relief for the Tigers. Starter Spencer Turnbull went 3.0 innings. There was a total of 30 hits and six errors between the two teams. The Red Sox start a four game series in Baltimore against the Orioles on Friday night.
