The Boston Red Sox scored nine runs over the first four innings on Saturday night to take an early 9-2 lead, cruising to their third straight win with an 11-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards in Baltimore. After a sweep at the hands of the O’s at Fenway to begin the season, Boston has now won five straight against the Birds.
Baltimore (15-18) took one lead in the game when DJ Stewart singled in Cedric Mullins in the bottom of the first to make it 1-0 Orioles. Boston took the lead for good with a four run second. Marwin Gonzalez doubled in Christian Vazquez, Hunter Renfoe singled in Gonzalez, and then Michael Chavis hit a two-run homerun to left center field. Chavis had just been recalled from the minors to join the big club, playing in his first game. Xander Bogaerts later added a two-run homer as well. Alex Verdugo and Bogaerts both had three hits to lead the Red Sox (21-13). Vazquez and Renfoe had two hits a piece, with Chavis, Bogaerts, Vazquez, and Bobby Dalbec each knocking in two runs. Bogaerts, Vazquez, and JD Martinez also each scored a pair of runs. Garrett Richards (2-2) pitched very solidly over 7.0 innings to pick up the win on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Austin Hays had two hits and two RBI for Baltimore, while Zac Lowther (0-1) was tagged with a loss on the hill allowing seven runs on seven hits in just 2.1 innings. Freddy Galvis also added a solo homer.
Boston and Baltimore play game three of the four game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Red Sox send Nick Pivetta to the mound, to be opposed by Dean Kremer for the O’s. Boston is tied for the most wins in the majors with the Oakland Athletics.
