Red Sox blank the Angels for third straight win

May 16, 2021

Alex Verdugo gave the Boston Red Sox all the offense they needed with a first inning solo homerun, as they won their straight game on Saturday evening with a 9-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Fenway Park.

Boston (25-16) would hit two other homeruns in the game as Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run shot in the fifth inning and Rafael Devers a solo bomb in the seventh. Martin Perez (1-2) only allowed three hits in 6.0 innings with four walks and five strikeouts in winning his first game of the season. Phillips Valdez, Darwinzon Hernandez, and Austin Brice allowed just a total of one hit in 1.0 inning each of relief. Verdugo, Bogaerts, Devers, JD Martinez, Bobby Dalbec, and Franchy Cordero all had two hits each in the Sox victory. Phil Gosselin had two hits to lead Los Angeles (16-22), who is currently in last place in the American League West. Dylan Bundy (0-5) was charged with seven runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings in the pitching loss.

Boston goes for the three game sweep to try to finish the six game homestand at 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at 1:10. The Sox send RHP Nathan Eovaldi to the mound, and the Angels counter with LHP Jose Quintana.
